Our Teachers
A stern, religious conservative, Monsignor Popek died Dec 16, 1986 at the age of 73. Unbeknownst to many is the fact that he held a doctorate and authored several books including, "A Collection of Writings for the Apostolate of Suffering - 1968-1982," which deals with catechism and religious philosophy. The "Monsignor Alphonse S. Popek Award" is still awarded annually by the organization known as Catholics United for the Faith, and Polanki, the Polish Women's Cultural Club of Milwaukee, awards an annual college scholarship in his name. Monsignor Popek received his doctorate from The Catholic University of America in 1947, and his dissertation was entitled, "The Rights and Obligations of Metropolitans. A Historical Synopsis and Commentary. A Dissertation."

Deda
Mrs. Bernadine M. Deda
Mrs. Deda died February 28, 2006, and information from the web has revealed that she was 93-years old at the time of her death. She actually taught at St. Francis High School after leaving OLQP.
Cary Winslow, Class of 1969, has provided us with a full name: Genevieve Wiser. The January 1, 2002 edition of The Milwaukee Journal contains Sister Genevieve Wiser's obituary. "Wiser, Sr. Genevieve SSSF - Dec 28, 2001 Age 89 years. Survived by 1 sister, 1 brother, other relatives and the School Sisters of St. Francis with whom she shared her life for 69 years. Visitation Wed Jan 2, 4-6 PM at St. Joseph Convent Chapel, 1501 S. Layton Blvd., with Funeral Mass at 6 PM. Internment Thurs. 8:30AM Mt Olivet. Memorials to SSSF Development Office appreciated." She also taught in the Chicago area after leaving OLQP. (2011)

Sister Joan
Sister Joan C. Klauer
Sister M. Jean Louise
Cary Winslow also provided some excellent information on Sister Joan including confirming her last name. Sister Joan Klauer, S.S.S.F., left the order in 1969 and was working as a school teacher in Fox Point. I have since discovered the following. She was born the day before Pearl Harbor (Dec 6, 1941) and entered the convent at age 14 in 1956. Joan was the second child of Julius and Genevieve Klauer of Cassville, WI. She has three sisters: Patricia(John J.) Rauch of Milwaukee, Deborah, Dana, and two brothers: William and Roderick. Her father died in 1988 after the family had moved from Cassville to Oconomowoc. As of that date, Joan Carol Klauer had married Fred Rohrer, and they were living in Nashotah, WI. They may now be living in Watertown. "Joan C. Rohrer" can be found on Facebook, and here is her profile picture. I'm guessing this is from the early 70s. (March 2012)

Once again, Cary came up with the following to close the book on Mr. Swanke: Shawano Leader; Friday, March 05, 2010: Stephen R. Swanke, age 71, of Tigerton passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Rennes Rehabilitation Center, Weston. Stephen Robert Swanke was born Jan. 12, 1939 in Appleton to Roy and Theo (Glueckstein) Swanke. Steve was raised in Tigerton and graduated from high school in 1957. He went to UW-Oshkosh, receiving a bachelor's in art with a minor in science. On May 6, 1967 he was united in marriage to Jacqueline V. Sarwas at St. Anthony's of Padua in Milwaukee. Steve first taught science for seven years at Our Lady of Peace in Milwaukee. The couple settled in Tigerton where Steve was employed as an art teacher with the Tigerton School District. He taught art for K-12 from 1974 until retirement in 2001. Steve was an active member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Tigerton, where he sang in the choir, taught religious education, and served as a Eucharist Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 5008, Tigerton. Steve enjoyed the outdoors, mainly camping, biking, canoeing and traveling. He liked sign painting, was a gifted artist, and was the "idea man" who could repair anything.

Survivors include: his wife, Jacqueline, and three children, Bridget Swanke of Pella, Matthew (Jamie) Swanke of La Crosse, and Michael (Julie) Swanke of Minneapolis, Minn. There is a granddaughter, Edythe, and a grandson on the way. Steve is further survived by his father-in-law, Roman Sarwas of Wittenberg; two brothers-in-law, Melvin Peterson of Shawano and Roman (Darla) Sarwas Jr. of Birch Bay, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Alice Swanke of Connecticutt and Patricia Swanke of Ladysmith; and nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Terese Peterson; and two brothers, Roy and James Swanke. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 6, at noon at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Tigerton. Fr. Patrick Lloyd will officiate and burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Tigerton. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Tigerton, and on Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of Mass at the church. Online condolences may be sent via www.beil-didier.com. Memorials are preferred to the Gift of Life Transplant House, Rochester, Minn., or to Wisconsin Public Radio in Steve's memory. The family really appreciated the nurses and staff at Rennes Rehabilitation Center for the compassion and respect shown to Steve. Also a special thanks to the entire Marshfield Clinic team at St. Claire's Cancer Care in Weston. A Later Picture (2023)

Paulann Albanese Haas
Paulann is married to Mark Haas, and they live in New Berlin. She has three children-- Rachel, Hillary and Lindsay. She is a Pius grad, the only one I could find from our class. That must have been a long bus ride. So could she be married to fellow Pius Alum Mark Haas? Could they possibly have been high school sweethearts? (2023)
Found peace on May 24, 2020 at the age of 66. Loving sister of Janice (James) Wilkins, Jo-Anne (the late Jay) Lessing, and the late Craig (Barbara) Barczak. Dear aunt of Christopher (Elizabeth) Barczak and Jennifer Barczak. Preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Gloria Barczak. Further survived by other loved relatives and many friends. Back in 2008, Cheryl retired from her position on the professional staff of the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association. She had been with MTEA for 28 years. She now owns two gift stores in the Milwaukee area--The Gift Box and A Sweet Life at 7629 & 7633 West Beloit Road. She has also opened a doggie day care facility--It's A Dog Life at 4501 South 76th Street. I wish I had half her ambition! (PHS '72) Picture 2008 (Sept 2008/March 2022)

Gary Begal
Gary Begal
Gary was killed in a car crash on August 13, 2013 at the intersection of 27th and Howard, less than a mile from his lifelong home. Fox News Story on Accident Gary retired from the City of Milwaukee in early 2009. He was living in the same house that he did when he attended OLQP and was one of the Saturday regulars at OLQP Church, where he occasionally would see Ed Fons. A graduate of Boy's Tech, Gary attended MSOE and was happily single. I doubt if Gary would have liked long walks on the beach because he was just not that kind of guy. Does everyone know that Gary is year older than the rest of us? His birthday was so late in the year that he had to wait until the next year to start. Always thought he'd live to be a 100 as he was always active with softball and bowling. Guess I was wrong. Sadly, he is missed. (2023)
"I am alive and well, living in the Town of Lisbon, WI, just outside of Milwaukee. I am married to Debby, my wife of 20 years, with two kids, Nichole, 17 and Kyle, 14. I currently work for Harley-Davidson. Good web site, must have taken a lot of work and research." (2023) Randall Boyea

Diane Spott still exchanges Christmas cards with Sandra and provided the following information. Sandra is married to James Anthony Cottrill; has 2 sons, Richard J.(28) and Anthony J. (29); and is an Administrative Specialist with Milwaukee County. They live in the Greenfield area, and it appears that husband James is a Hamilton graduate, Class of 1974. Sandra can be found on Facebook. Sadly, her father Robert passed on April 18, 2012 at the age of 86. Our condolences on her loss. (April 2012/December 2023)
From the St. Bernard Parish Web Site: I joined the staff of St. Bernard as Parish Secretary in May 2011. Prior to this position I was a Customer Service representative in special projects at Reiman Publications (Readers Digest) for 15 years. Before that I worked at Geiser's Potato Chip Company ("Be wiser buy Geiser's") for 20 years, starting in the packaging factory and ending in accounts receivable and receptionist. After Geiser's was bought out by Borden's, the production plant was closed and later the offices were also closed. I was born in Escanaba, Michigan and my mom, 2 sisters, and brother, and I moved to Milwaukee after the death of my dad when I was 13. I currently live in the house my grandparents had built in the early 50's on Milwaukee's south side. I went to Pulaski High School and have been an active parish member of Blessed Sacrament for many years. I love working at St. Bernard and feel very at home here, mostly because of many of the members I have come to know and care about. Current Picture (Claudia and I shared a Driver's Ed. car at Pulaski. Claudia lost her mom and two sisters in just a few short years. I had worked at Gimbel's with her sister, Susan, who unfortunately died at the age of 48.) (PHS '72)(October 2015/December 2023)

Everybody likes a story, and Henry certainly has one. Henry is a lawyer just like dad. Henry's wife is named Lidia, and she works as a realtor in Greenfield. They live in Muskego and attend St. Leonard Congregation in Muskego. (I wonder if the boys went there for grade school?) They have two children--Thomas, age 27, and Philip, age 23. Thomas graduated from The United States Military Academy in 2010 and majored in Chemical Engineering. (I am impressed.) He is currently stationed at Fort Drum as a Battalion Logistics Officer. Philip is a Loyola grad and is also in the US Army stationed at Fort Rucker in Alabama. I wonder if he is in pilot training? Phil can be found on Facebook. This information all came from public records on the Internet and may be subject to error. (April 2015/December 2023)

Patricia Jakubicz Berg
Patricia Jakubicz Berg
Last spotted at Pulaski High School in 1971, Patricia does not appear in the 1972 Pulaski Cavalier yearbook. I wonder what ever happened to her? Well, wonder no more as Patricia has been located and is living in Menomonee Falls with husband Tom Berg. She has at least one son named Jason who recently married or is about to. There is some indication that her family possibly moved to South Milwaukee prior to her senior year in high school. We now have pictures:1 2 (June 2011/December 2023)
OK, so maybe now I have the right name with this face. Gary was a big swimmer while at Hamilton High School. There are some indications that he is possibly married to Judy with no mention of children. This appears to be a 2nd marriage. A big thanks to Paul for the following update: I lived in Milwaukee, Pewaukee and Oak Creek, WI for 54 years except when I attended and graduated from UW-Platteville and for two years when I tried to start a business in the Chicago area. I lost one brother, James P. Kaye, OLQP 1966, Pio Nono 1970, in July 2001. James died in his sleep from a brain aneurism. Without exception the most significant, life changing event for me was when I became a Christian, Born Again in the Spirit, in February of 2000 as a result of reading the Bible. As it has for many others, this Rebirth and Salvation experience permanently changed my thoughts, behaviors and my way of life. It has given me lasting, inner peace and joy regardless of my external circumstances. My only regret is that this did not happen earlier in life. I have since read and taught numerous Bible Studies over the years and I hope to perhaps pursue graduate studies in Theology. I married a Christian woman, Lina Song, in July 2008. Lina was born and lived in Shang Hai China until she and her family moved to the United States in 1992. We relocated to Tampa, FL in June 2009 where I am still employed by a large, international bank and Lina works in retail. I have two adult children, son Andrew 27 and daughter Jennifer 24, from a prior marriage and one adult step-daughter Deborah, 31 who had a baby boy Kyle born February 14, 2014 Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 (Pio Nono 72)(May 2010)

Other OLQP Contacts:
I have been in contact my whole life with Lawrence Graf who resides in Warrens, WI (Cranberry Land). Lawrence pursued his desire to live in the country to hunt, fish and grow gardens and built a large Cedar Home on 40 acres of land. While Larry and my lifestyles are completely opposite, country vs city living, we share a much stronger, more eternal, bond in that he also is a Born Again Christian who reads and studies the Bible. We still communicate regularly and enjoy sharing our continuous growth and knowledge in the Lord. James Miazga and I were the only two OLQP graduates who attended and graduated from Pio Nono High School in 1972. I had seen James at Pio Nono HS Reunions in 1997 and 2002. James remained single, but sadly passed away on March 24, 2012. At that time he was still residing in his parents house on Lakefield Drive in Milwaukee. I interacted with my First Grade Teacher, Sister Charlene (later Sister "Mary") from 1991 to 1995 when she was on staff at St. James Catholic Parish in Franklin, WI. Ironically, this prompted an attempt on my part to try to organize a 25 year OLQP Reunion which did not materialize mostly due to a lack of interest. Sister Mary (Charlene) retired from ministry at St. James shortly after I left in 1995 and I lost contact with her. Patrick Lynch had also resided in Tampa, FL since about 1978. I met and visited with Pat late in December 2014 upon learning that he was in the final stages of a cancer that he was battling for about 8 years. Pat was in very good spirits, still had his quick wit, and even had the original copy of his Marian Children's Missal which was one of our First Communion keepsakes from OLQP. Sadly, Patrick did succumb to his illness and passed away on March 13, 2015. Patrick's Obituary" I was able to attend a Celebration Event for Pat here in Tampa which was attended by his siblings and other family members from the north and his numerous friends here in Tampa. Suffice to say, he will be missed by many. (May 2010/September 2015)

Surprise, surprise--Mark is a Partner and Vice President of Sales for Poblocki Sign in West Allis. He has been described as "filthy rich." I am thoroughly jealous. After 75 years, the company is no longer headed by a Poblocki, and another site indicates the company has been sold. I had received an email from Suzanne back in 2009. I never knew that her dad, Stan, owned and operated Stan's Bootery on 27th Street. Her brother Jim n now operates the company under the name 'Stan's Fit for Your Feet' with 5 stores around the city. Suzanne was in charge of the HR division. Here's a link to Stan's 2006 obituary, which talks about the business. Daughter Crystalyn is a Marquette grad in Education. (February 2009/May 2014)

Sadly Claudine lost her husband Jerome "Jerry" Doornek in December of 2022 after 26 years of marriage. Del Szewczuga ran into Claudine when he responded to an emergency call at the facility where she worked, but that was years ago. She has two sons, Ethan & Jason and she's a grandmother to eleven(?). Claudine is/was a case manager with the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services. (Don Bosco 72)(June 2011/May 2024)

Del Szewczuga
Del Szewczuga RN, EMT-P
Del is married to Rena and has one son, Keith. "Currently, I work for Milwaukee County EMS (23 years). I train all of the Fire Department based paramedics (EMT-P) in Milwaukee County. We work in conjunction with the Medical College of Wisconsin. I am sure that you 'Googled' me and that is how you found out some of the information. You can see that I have published several papers dealing with emergency care of adults and children. I am also involved with research studies on a national level. Maybe that is how you connected me with the Medical College. Our current study is looking at the best way to treat seizures in the out of hospital environment. Hopefully that will be published in two years. As you well know, research takes time. We do a lot of research here and that is why Milwaukee County EMS has been rated the second best EMS system in the country for many years (only Seattle does it better). That accomplishment does not belong to me; it belongs to the paramedics of Milwaukee County. I just teach them how to do their job, they are the ones that have to go out and do it. You can also see that I have also held various positions with the American Heart Association. I am the only RN in the State of Wisconsin to have held the position of National Faculty for Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). If you are in medicine, that's an accomplishment. Usually only MD's are in that position. If you're not in medicine, it doesn't mean much. I have also lectured on EMS topics both nationally and internationally. Ouch! I almost dislocated my shoulder patting myself on the back! Once the applause quiets down I'll continue. I am also a faculty member at Milwaukee Area Technical College where I teach EMS classes. So far, I have not had any of our classmates as a student." A Current Picture (Greenfield HS/UW-Oshkosh) (October 2009)

Richard R. Weber

Many thanks to Sue Porth who provided not only her own update, but supplied a solid lead to Rick Weber. -- According to his online bio at East High School in the West Bend School District, "Rick holds a Bachelor's Degree with Honors from the Univ. of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Special Education and a Master's Degree from the Univ. of Wisconsin- Milwaukee in School Leadership. He began his career in Education teaching at Oak Knoll and Decorah Schools and then spent 12 years as a Principal for the Mayville School District. He returned to the West Bend Schools and for the past ten years has been teaching at the High School."

Sadly, Rick's wife of 35 years, Jane, passed in September 2010 leaving behind him and their two sons, Andrew and Sam. Andrew is married and lives in North Carolina, while Sam is living the adventurer's life in Brooklyn with his fiancee. Sorry Rick that your picture is so torn up, but here is a Current Picture that's a lot more flattering at our ages. (Unconfirmed) (March 2010)

"Major Al" retired from the United States Air Force in 1997 and now is the witness protection program somewhere in Arizona, or is it New Mexico? He has lived in England, Germany, Texas, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and even Maine. "Bob" has been married to his wife, Dr. Sharon, for 40 years. After completing yet another degree, he worked for far too many years at the University of Utah's Center for High Performance Computing disguised as a Network Engineer.

Alan is a graduate of St.Francis DeSales High School Seminary and the author of this wonderful site. But then you should have guessed that since the web address is his name with a dot-com at the end! While he hopes that none of you remember, Alan was the sole representative of the Class of 1968 to plan on becoming a priest. Whether it was aptitude or inclination, Alan eventually sought another means of bringing people to God--by joining the military. Thanks Alan for that wonderfully refreshing update. You're welcome. And now for something completely different--Current Pictures   (February 2010)
